Hocking Hills, Ohio 2018 - Trip Notes

Cedar Falls
October 23 - Travel Day

It was my friend Steve Pepple's idea to go. Hocking Hills is said to be an amazing state park and it should have great fall colors. And it was only a four hour drive to our Logan Ohio VRBO, helped by google maps. There wasn't much traffic except thru Columbus, yuck.  Got to our VRBO by check-in, 3pm.  The place looks better online than in person but it'll be OK.  The owner was considerate with good instructions and a well equipped pellet stove.  There were two upstairs bedrooms, a very steep stairs some might call a ladder and single downstairs bathroom .  Not the best for a couple of old pee-in-the-night men.  And the sulfer-water well, ugh. I’m not going to shave or shower, teeth brushing bad enough. Good internet connection though.
Not to waste time, we headed out to our first hike, Ash Cave.  Very large overhang with a mini-waterfall.  A very short in and out hike on a paved trail.
Getting there was a 12 mile 20 minute drive on some of the windiest and hilliest, and narrowest roads, so slow does it.
No surprise, we had time for a second stop and drove to see Cedar Falls, a beautiful waterfall that splits halfway down making interesting subject matter.  We were losing light, the tall trees obstructed the late afternoon sun. Maybe we’ll go back to try some more.
For dinner we ate at  Millstone Southern Smoked BBQ.  It was a 3 on the 1-10 scale for BBQ.

This is the Rock House
October 24, 2018 - Old Man's Cave and Rock House

Breakfast at M&M Family Diner, a seriously cute place with M&M tchotchkes all around the shelves and walls. Except the entrance looked like a chapel revering OSU. Michelle was a wonderful host and the breakfast was every bit as good as the atmosphere which we loved.
The first adventure was the Rock House.
Next was a stop at Old Man’s cave named after an old hermit. This place was really beautiful with a lower and an upper waterfall. The State went all out with this trail. Many bridges, all different and unique almost as if they was a contest and these were the winners. Devil’s Bathtub there was a unique waterfall.

We chose the Home Tavern, a "biker bar", to have dinner. No bikers but some great locals. They didn't go to the place for the food but to play pool, apparently the main recreation in Logan.

Conkles Hollow felt prehistoric
October 25, 2018 - Cantwell Cliffs and Conkles Hollow

The owner of the Home Tavern told us it was the go to place for breakfast. So we did and it was good.
Hiked through a narrow passage to the floor of Cantwell Cliffs and to the end of the canyon then back and out. We skipped the rim trail and headed to Conkles Hollow. Incredibly lush will many fallen trees leaving you with the impression that you were in a prehistoric forest and a raptor was waiting around the corner. Instead it was just a little water fall at the end and we hiked out.

Leaving our Logan Ohio VRBO
October 26, 2018 - Returning to Michigan

Just an uneventful drive back in time to get ready for Linda and I to fly to Croatia. We probably missed some highlights. There were over 30 miles of trails and we might have covered five. We arrived too early for the fall color which was the motivation for going in October and from the photos we saw, winter is even more dramatic. But oh well, it really a beautiful state park, for Ohio.
